Result
It was estimated by Winston Churchill that 1 million American soldiers and 250,000 British soldiers were saved by the "sudden shortening of the war". On August 15, 1945 at 12:00 PM, Emperor Hirohito declared the surrender of Japan, with the formal agreement being signed on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri. It is undetermined whether the atomic bombings played any role in Japan's surrender, but it is possible that they could have been a factor in Hirohito's decision.
